AmSol’s leadership team is composed of a vital balance between clinical and management expertise. All voices of an effective team are present, from licensed and practicing medical professionals to critical business functions such as recruiting, billing services and marketing. All structured to design and deliver balanced, objective and professional leadership for optimal anesthesiology management services.

James W. Cottrell, MD – Founder and Corporate Advisor

Before Dr. Cottrell co-founded Anesthesia Management Solutions, LLC (AmSol) in 2001, he worked for 30 years as an anesthesiologist at hospitals in Ohio, Tennessee, and Missouri. Early in his clinical career, he was promoted to Assistant Director of his anesthesia department, and soon thereafter became the director. Since then, he has held positions as Medical Director for a Surgical Intensive Care Unit, a Respiratory Therapy department, and several Departments of Anesthesia. In 1992, he became Vice President and Medical Director of Coastal Health Care Anesthesia Partners, where his duties included

sales, marketing, recruiting, and department management.

Dr. Cottrell has held faculty appointments at East Tennessee State University and lectures on anesthesia department services, operations and management, and narcotic based anesthesia. An expert in Operating Room management and efficiency, Dr. Cottrell uses his real-world experiences in managing anesthesiology departments to bring effective leadership to AmSol clients. He is a two-time graduate of the Ohio State University, attending there for both undergraduate and medical school.


Larry Hornsby, CRNA

Hornsby Headshot_resizeMr. Hornsby joined the AmSol team in 2007, bringing years of expertise in anesthesia department management with him. In 1991, he formed Anesthesia Professionals, Inc., one of the first CRNA-owned anesthesia management groups in Alabama. His business grew exponentially, eventually serving hospitals and surgery centers across the southeast. In the 1990s, Mr. Hornsby served in various leadership positions in the Alabama Association of Nurse Anesthetists, including two terms as President. Then, after serving as Regional Director, Treasurer, and Vice President of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, he was elected President in 2000. Mr. Hornsby remains highly involved in the AANA, having led and served on various advisory boards and committees such as the AANA Commission on Anesthesia Economics and Reimbursement, Government Relations Committee, and Anesthesia Payment Advisory Panel. An expert in anesthesia business, he lectures frequently on topics relating to the subject for anesthesia schools, state association meetings, and continuing education seminars across the country. In 2013, Mr. Hornsby was nominated and selected to receive the Agatha Hodgins Award for Outstanding Accomplishment from the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists–the highest honor bestowed by the organization. He received his nurse anesthesia and nursing education from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in Birmingham, Alabama.

Mark Pinosky, MD, DHA
Chief Medical Officer

Pinosky_Lab (3)Dr. Pinosky is a board certified anesthesiologist practicing full time in Georgia. In addition to his clinical practice, he serves as Chief of Anesthesia for the Columbus Regional Midtown Medical Center and as Medical Director for Columbus Regional Health System. Prior to this present tour of duty, Dr. Pinosky joined the AmSol team in 2003 when he practiced full time serving as Medical Director at Bon Secours Saint Francis Hospital in Charleston, South Carolina. Prior to joining that practice as Director of Operations, Dr. Pinosky obtained over 10 years of experience in the academic setting as an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). In May 2003, he was awarded a Doctorate in Health Administration and Policy from the College of Health Professionals at MUSC. His dissertation, “Conflict Management in the High Stress Environment of the Operating Room,” has proven insightful in day-to-day interactions with operating room staff. Dr. Pinosky has experience serving as Chairman of Credentials Committee while at MUSC, and he is a graduate of Physician Leadership Academy sponsored by the Advisory Board Company. Dr. Pinosky is also certified as a Master Trainer for the National implementation of Team STEPPS, a program of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. He serves on numerous committees at the Medical Center in Georgia, including the Medical Executive Committee, Surgical Services Committee, and Trauma Committee.

Jim Fisher, MBA – Vice President, Operations and Analytics

As a CPA, Mr. Fisher established AmSol’s accounting system in 2002 and managed all accounting functions in AmSol’s earliest years. Later, he became involved in practice management, taking responsibility for several practices. As the developer of AmSol’s proprietary Harmony database software, Mr. Fisher’s efforts are now focused on evaluating opportunities to make more efficient use of anesthesia resources. He holds a Master of Business Administration in Accounting and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology.

Chris Heggie, CPA – Controller

In 2003, Mr. Heggie began working as a staff accountant for AmSol and became Controller in 2008. He is experienced in public accounting, both in regional size firms and in the “Big 4.” His primarily role at AmSol is financial reporting, cash management, financial compliance, and supervision of the accounting staff. Mr. Heggie holds a Bachelor of Science in Business from UNC-Chapel Hill and took additional accounting classes to sit for the CPA exam at UT-Chattanooga.

Michelle House – Accounting Manager

Ms. House joined AmSol’s accounting team in 2006. In her current position as Accounting Manager, she manages all aspects of accounting and financial reporting for multiple clients. Building and nurturing relationships within the AmSol provider team, as well as with our partners, is an integral part of her role. Prior to joining AmSol, Ms. House was a pre-algebra teacher and Adjunct Instructor at Davidson Community College. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Finance degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Laura Lesley, MS – Director of Strategic Communication

Joining AmSol in 2013, Ms. Lesley is responsible for AmSol’s brand management and web presence. She plays an important role in the development of marketing materials for recruiting and new business development, and also in the development of internally-facing communications. Prior to joining AmSol, she worked as Director of Alumni Affairs, Annual Fund, and Communication in a university setting.  Ms. Lesley holds a Master of Science in Strategic Communication from Troy University and a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Management from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Donald Safrit – Accounting Manager

Since 2008, Mr. Safrit has been a member of AmSol’s highly trained and experienced accounting team. His duties include budget and financial analyst responsibilities, general accounting, and compensation calculations. Mr. Safrit has over 23 years of experience in accounting and holds a Bachelor of Science in Economics degree from Lenoir-Rhyne College.

Paula Smith – Client Coordinator

An experienced office manager, Ms. Smith joined the AmSol team in 2003. She is responsible for day-to-day operations at AmSol’s office in Birmingham, Alabama and coordinates locum tenens payments and accounts payable through our main office.  Ms. Smith also plays an important role in partnering with AmSol’s billing company to process deposits for several facilities.  In addition to her routine management and client responsibilities, Ms. Smith supports AmSol’s anesthesia teams at various facilities, plans corporate events, and supports management.

Melva Walker – Executive Assistant

Ms. Walker joined AmSol in 2002 as an experienced office manager. She is responsible for day-to-day operations at AmSol’s main office in High Point, North Carolina and plays a vital role in client relations. In addition to her routine management and client responsibilities, Ms. Walker supports AmSol’s executive management team, plans corporate events, and facilitates company-wide communications.

Tony Wilson – Vice President, Staffing & Marketing

A seasoned anesthesia recruiter, Mr. Wilson joined AmSol in 2006 and is now responsible for recruiting, temporary and permanent placements of anesthesiologists and CRNAs, credentialing, and contract management. He is also highly involved in the onboarding of new clinical staff. Mr. Wilson has 25 years of experience in anesthesia recruiting, with 10 years spent owning his own physician recruiting company. He holds dual bachelors degrees in History and Political Science from Elon University.

Gary Haynes, MD, PhD – Regional Medical Director

A board certified anesthesiologist, Dr. Haynes serves as Regional Medical Director for AmSol with a primary assignment as Director of Anesthesia Services for a client facility in West Virginia. He is a former Professor and Chair in the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care at Saint Louis University School of Medicine. As a Grant Reviewer for the Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation, Dr. Haynes plays an important role in awarding up to $750,000 every year for research in patient safety. He is an experienced lecturer on innovative topics pertaining to clinical anesthesia and his research has been published in peer-reviewed journals, abstracts, and book chapters.  Dr. Haynes is a graduate of Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.

Ronald Whorton, CRNA – Regional VP of Clinical Operations

Mr. Whorton has been a Registered Nurse since 1983 and a CRNA since 1987. He currently serves as AmSol’s Vice President of Clinical Operations, and additionally as Director/Manager of Anesthesia Services for a client facility in West Virginia. Formerly, Mr. Whorton was Director of Anesthesia Services at the University of Alabama Health System in Birmingham, Alabama (UAB Health System). Prior to the UAB Directorship, he held the position of Chief CRNA in the Anesthesia Services Division for 7 years and a staff CRNA for 12 years. Mr. Whorton has also been involved in academia and served as an adjunct faculty member for the UAB Nurse Anesthesia Program and as a guest lecturer for the Ida V. Moffet Nurse Anesthesia Program at Samford University. Also, he is a BLS / ACLS / PALS Instructor working with Medical Education Associates of Alabama. Mr. Whorton has been active in the Alabama Association of Nurse Anesthetists, where he has held numerous leadership positions including President in 2001. Mr. Whorton received his undergraduate nursing education at the University of Alabama prior to receiving advanced degrees in Nurse Anesthesia from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Frank Saliba, CRNA, MBA, JD – Regional CRNA Manager

Since 2009, Mr. Saliba has been serving as Regional CRNA Manager for AmSol. His primary assignment is to manage several anesthesia departments at a multi-hospital health system in Georgia. Prior to joining AmSol’s management team, Mr. Saliba worked for over 20 years as a practicing CRNA at various hospitals in the Montgomery, Alabama area. In addition to his nursing degree from the University of Alabama and his nurse anesthesia degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Mr. Saliba holds a Masters in Business Administration from Auburn University in Montgomery and a Juris Doctorate from Jones School of Law. He held a private law practice for several years in the late 1990s.

Kerry Gossett, CRNA – Regional Vice President

Mr. Gossett has been a CRNA for over 30 years and has been involved in the business of anesthesia for 20 years. In 1995, he co-founded Anesthesia Resources Management, Inc., one of the first CRNA-owned anesthesia management companies in the country. Since then, he has been a cofounder, shareholder, and officer of many anesthesia management entities spanning the southeast. Most recently, Mr. Gossett served as Clinical Director of Anesthesia at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama, where he was responsible for the day-to-day operations and management of 48 CRNAs in six surgical areas across the campus, as well as administrative duties. An alumnus of Samford University, he remains actively involved in its Nurse Anesthesia Program as a fundraiser, admissions committee member, and advisory board member. Mr. Gossett has served on the Board of Directors for the Alabama Association of Nurse Anesthetists and is an active member of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists.
